There are 566 federally recognised tribes of indigenous peoples - American Indians or Alaskan Natives - in North America. In 2010, the US government voiced its support for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The same year, US Congress used the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R.3326, Sec.8113 (111th Cong., 2009-2010)) to issue an apology to Native Americans for the discriminatory treatment they have received in history.
